Feasibility study evaluates integration of the Cox CXO300 diesel outboard into existing RHIB platforms

Barrus, one of the UK’s leading marine engine suppliers, has partnered with Chartwell Marine to undertake a feasibility study investigating the modernisation of existing rigid inflatable boats (RHIBs) through the integration of alternative propulsion solutions.

The study aimed to determine whether the Cox CXO300 diesel outboard could be successfully retrofitted, assessing the engineering implications of integrating the propulsion system within the existing vessel architecture.

Barrus, as the authorised UK & Ireland distributor of Cox Marine diesel outboard engines, commissioned the study in collaboration with Cox Marine and Chartwell, selected for its expertise in propulsion engineering and vessel design.

Chartwell undertook a comprehensive evaluation of the RHIB, assessing single and twin CXO300 configurations across structural integrity, weight and trim, performance predictions, and installation requirements. The study concluded that a single CXO300 installation is the preferred solution, offering performance comparable to previous configurations with minimal modification to the existing vessel.

The repowering study provides operators considering such transitions with a clear, evidence-based understanding of the requirements involved. The switch from petrol to diesel reduces flammability risk during vessel transportation, extends servicing intervals, and provides a more operationally efficient propulsion solution for demanding roles. The scope of work also included high-quality marketing renders and detailed general arrangement drawings, supporting Barrus and Cox Marine in communicating the solution to their customers.

The assessment identified the Cox 300hp Diesel Outboard as a strong repowering option, offering high torque, fuel efficiency, diesel compatibility, and durability. These findings support informed propulsion-upgrade decisions focused on sustainability, efficiency, and asset optimisation .”
