DNV Type Approval covers both air-cooled and liquid-cooled configurations of Corvus Energy’s next-generation battery platform
Corvus Energy has announced that DNV has granted Type Approval to its Blue Whale NxtGen Energy battery system, covering both air-cooled and liquid-cooled configurations.
The Type Approval confirms that Blue Whale NxtGen Energy meets DNV requirements for safety, quality and performance, providing shipowners, shipyards and system integrators with independent verification of the system’s suitability for a wide range of maritime applications.
Blue Whale NxtGen Energy is ideal for vessel owners seeking maximum energy capacity, operational flexibility, and proven safety in large-scale battery installations. Built on Corvus Energy’s next-generation rack-free and modular architecture, it is particularly well suited for large electric and hybrid ferries, RoPax vessels, cruise ships, offshore vessels, and other applications that require substantial energy storage and extended zero-emission operation.
The system combines LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) chemistry with advanced battery management, cybersecurity, and lifecycle support to deliver high reliability and long service life. Its modular design simplifies installation, improves space utilization, and allows systems to scale from smaller hybrid applications to some of the world’s largest battery-powered vessels. With independent DNV Type Approval and a growing track record in high-capacity projects, Blue Whale NxtGen Energy provides shipowners, shipyards, and designers with a safe, cost-effective, and future-ready energy storage solution that supports the maritime industry’s transition to low- and zero-emission operations
“Type Approval for Blue Whale NxtGen Energy is an important milestone for Corvus Energy and for the maritime industry’s transition to low- and zero-emission operations. We see a clear trend towards larger battery installations, as the economics of electrification improve and vessels need longer electric range and more operational flexibility.
With Blue Whale NxtGen Energy, we combine proven LFP technology, high safety and a competitive cost profile with significantly more energy capacity, so customers can deploy larger and more cost-effective battery systems with confidence. Having secured more than 100 MWh in confirmed orders already proves the trust in the design and quality of our products” says Thor Humerfelt, Head of Product Innovation at Corvus Energy.
Vessel battery systems are growing quickly in size. Rising fuel costs and stricter emissions regulations are strengthening the business case for electrification, and owners are specifying longer electric range and more fully electric operation.
The NxtGen platform is designed for this development. Its rack-free, modular architecture allows flexible integration and makes efficient use of the space on board. The scalable design simplifies installation and supports multi-MWh energy storage systems, reducing system complexity and making better use of the available battery room.
