Duchy of Cornwall Invests in New Pilot Vessel for Isles of Scilly

The Duchy of Cornwall has announced a major investment in its maritime operations at St. Mary’s Harbour on the Isles of Scilly with the purchase of a new pilot vessel from Goodchild Marine Services Ltd to assist the commercial activities of the port.

A newly built ORC 121 pilot vessel will be delivered to the harbour in late 2025, replacing the current vessel Pegasus, and will be fitted with the latest navigational technology, safety features and will deliver improved efficiency through hull design.

The partnership between the Duchy of Cornwall and Goodchild Marine Services Ltd is a tangible investment for the Isles of Scilly community, particularly highlighting the Duchy of Cornwall’s commitment and reaffirming its responsibility to the islands.

Matthew Morris, Rural Director at the Duchy of Cornwall and Duty Holder for St. Mary’s Harbour, said: “This investment by the Duchy of Cornwall highlights our commitment to the Isles of Scilly pilotage function.

“A newly built vessel with vastly improved safety features, as well as IMO TIER III compliance for emissions, will have huge benefits throughout its service life and aligns with our aim of safety and sustainability.”

Pegasus was previously provided as a multi-role vessel and as she nears the end of her service life, the Duchy of Cornwall is continuing to focus on the safety of its pilots in an area which has seen significant growth since Pegasus entered service back in 2007.

Dale Clark, Harbour Master at St Mary’s Harbour, said: “Cruise ship visits to the region have increased steadily over the last 10 years, and it is right to demonstrate that we are committed to the safety and wellbeing of our pilots by providing the best equipment, whilst at the same time, recognising the importance of the industry to the Isles of Scilly as a whole.

“The new pilot vessel will provide a safer, more stable platform for pilots, as well as reducing transfer times for vessels arriving and departing.”

Stephen, Pierce, General Manager, Goodchild Marine Services Limited, said: “Goodchild Marine Services is delighted to be afforded the opportunity to build a new Pilot Boat for the Duchy of Cornwall which will assist in the commercial activities of St Mary’s Port whilst maximising safety of the crew and being sensitive to the environment.”
