Fassmer and MEYER Group combine know-how for the construction of the research vessel METEOR IV

The Fassmer company, with the MEYER Group as a partner, has received the order to build a research ship for the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

In this way, the know-how of two well-known German specialist shipyards is combined in a consortium. With the experience of the Fassmer company in the design and manufacture of special ships for various authorities and ministries and the knowledge of the MEYER Group resulting from the construction of the deep-sea research ship SONNE, the customer was able to be convinced.

The ship has a length of approx. 125 meters and a size of approx. 10,000 GT. In addition to 35 scientists, 36 nautical and technical crew members have space on board.

The METEOR IV is designed for worldwide multifunctional and interdisciplinary research use, with a focus on the Atlantic. The new building will make an important contribution to national and international marine research, particularly in the areas of climate and environmental research.

“We are very happy that we will build this advanced research ship together with the MEYER Group. The intensive negotiations with the customer in an efficient award phase were a strong team effort and we are now looking forward to working with the MEYER Group,” says Harald Fassmer, Managing Partner of Fassmer.

The research vessel METEOR IV is scheduled for delivery in 2026 and will replace the existing METEOR and the POSEIDON, which has already been decommissioned.
