The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law which passed in November 2021 represents the biggest investment in public transit in US history to date. Part of the American Rescue Plan (ARP), the law includes billions to electrify and modernize ferry fleets and ports in the interest of reducing pollution, congestion, and commute times.
Glosten’s President Morgan Fanberg and Vice President Lisa Renehan (who is also managing director of Foil Ferry, LLC) joined Washington Secretary of Transportation Roger Millar, Executive Director of Kitsap Transit John Clauson, and John Wheeler, the mayor of Bremerton, to talk with Senator Murray last week about the future of Washington’s ferries and how the Glosten/Bieker Foil Ferry could revolutionize the region’s marine transportation.
Foil Ferry is faster, more energy efficient, and more environmentally friendly than a typical passenger catamaran. It has vast potential, but now that it’s nearing the end of its preliminary design phase, the project will need further funding before the design can be finalized and demonstrated.
As a ferry commuter herself, Senator Patty Murray understands how critical water transport is for Washingtonians. The state is home to the largest ferry system in the US, and Murray was able to secure $168 million of ARP funding to maintain and improve it. With the proper funding, Foil Ferry will answer Washington’s call for greener ferry operations in and around Puget Sound.
