Kewatec Secures German Patrol Boat Contract

Six Kewatec Rescue 1700 patrol boats will support German Water Police operations in the Baltic Sea

Kewatec Shipyards has signed an agreement to deliver six new patrol boats to the German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, where they will be operated by the state’s Water Police for patrol, surveillance and assistance missions in the Baltic Sea.

The vessels will be based on the proven Kewatec Rescue 1700 design, which is already operated by several customers in demanding working environments. The first vessel is scheduled for delivery in December 2027, with the final vessel to follow in March 2029.

Measuring 17.8 metres in length and 4.8 metres in beam, the patrol boats will be powered by twin Scania DI13 engines coupled to conventional shaft-and-propeller propulsion systems.

The vessels will have a maximum speed of 25 knots and a range of approximately 200 nautical miles at a cruising speed of 20 knots, providing the Water Police with the capability required for extended patrol and response operations.

Particular attention has been paid to energy efficiency and minimising fuel consumption. The vessels will also be equipped with solar panels to increase onboard energy self-sufficiency. The advanced navigation system will be supplied by Furuno’s German operation.

“This is a significant contract for Kewatec and further strengthens our position in the international market for government and public-authority vessels, particularly in Germany. It is an important achievement and demonstrates the international confidence in Kewatec’s expertise. The procurement process was long and involved several stages, but our persistent work paid off.” – Hannu Rantala, Sales Manager, Kewatec Shipyards

The order for six patrol boats strengthens Kewatec’s order book as well as its expertise in the design and construction of demanding vessels for public authorities at its Kokkola shipyard. Together with other ongoing and upcoming projects, the order will also increase Kewatec’s need for additional personnel in the coming years.
