Kongsberg Maritime to Power India’s First Fully Electric Tug

Kongsberg Maritime, a global leader in marine technology, has signed a landmark contract to deliver a complete, fully integrated equipment package for India’s first fully electric tug. This pioneering project marks a critical milestone in India’s Green Tug Transition Programme (GTTP) and represents the world’s first full integration of an all-electric tugboat propulsion and control system.

Awarded by Mandovi Drydocks in partnership with Ripley Group, the contract includes Kongsberg Maritime’s permanent magnet (PM) driven azimuth thrusters, advanced electrical systems including energy storage (ESS), automation and control (K-Chief and K-Chief PMS), digital solutions (Vessel Insight and Vessel Performance), and full system integration.
 
Operational support will be provided by Kongsberg Maritime India’s Global Customer Support team, ensuring confidence and lifecycle value for the owner and port operator.
 
Kongsberg Maritime is supplying technology solutions to a range of hybrid ‘e-tug’ projects, but this is the company’s first full-electric tug contract.
 
The electric tug is designed by NavNautik, will have 60-ton bollard pull. It will be delivered and commissioned in Q4 2026 and will operate at Deendayal Port, in Gujarat, one of the key sites under the Green Tug Transition Programme initiative promoted by the Government of India.

The Netincon Marketing and Ripley Shipping are subsidiaries of the Ripley Group of companies, a leading logistics provider, port developer, and ship owner on the east coast of India.
