Marine Licence Milestone For Seagreen 1A

The Seagreen 1A proposal has achieved a significant milestone after Scottish Government Ministers consented its Marine Licence application.

The Marine Licence covers the offshore elements of the project, including an export cable approximately 110km in length, to connect the project to the grid at Cockenzie in East Lothian.  The green-light for the Marine Licence is the next step for the multi-billion-pound project and follows East Lothian Council’s unanimous support for the Seagreen 1A onshore proposals in August 2021.

Seagreen, Scotland’s largest offshore wind farm and one of the biggest private investments in Scottish infrastructure, is being brought forward by SSE Renewables and TotalEnergies. All 150 offshore turbines are consented and the first 114 of these have a grid connection into Tealing, Angus, and are currently under construction in the Firth of Forth. The Seagreen 1A proposal is to connect the remaining 36 turbines to the grid and the Marine Licence paves the way for the offshore elements to connect these turbines at Cockenzie.

The application for the Marine Licence was submitted under section 20 of the Marine (Scotland) Act 2010 and section 65 of the Marine and Coastal Access Act 2009 to construct an offshore export cable approximately 110km in length, along with cable protection, in the Firth of Forth and Firth of Tay.

Seagreen 1A will hold Meet the Developer events in East Lothian to outline to local businesses the opportunities connected to the project and plan public consultation events on the design of the onshore substation plans in 2022.

About Seagreen 1A

Seagreen – Scotland’s largest offshore wind farm – is a development being taken forward by Seagreen Wind Energy Ltd (SWEL) which is owned by SSE Renewables and TotalEnergies. The Seagreen project, 27km off the Angus coastline and 66km off the East Lothian coastline, will be able to generate 1.5GW from 150 wind turbines. 114 of the 150 consented turbines have a grid connection into Tealing, Angus, and construction on this grid connection started in 2020 as part of wider construction works, currently underway, to deliver the 1.1GW Seagreen Offshore Wind Farm.  The Seagreen 1A proposal is to connect the remaining 36 consented turbines.  An application was made to National Grid in October 2019 for a grid connection and National Grid responded with an offer to connect into the existing substation at Cockenzie in East Lothian which was accepted.  The Seagreen 1A plans consist of an offshore cable corridor from the offshore wind farm to Cockenzie and proposals for landfall, the onshore cable corridor and the onshore substation. In August 2021, planning permission in principle (PPP) for the Seagreen 1A substation and onshore cable infrastructure at Cockenzie was unanimously approved by East Lothian Council.
