New Hybrid Shuttle Ferry for the city of Gothenburg

The Electrification of the Göta Älv river in Gothenburg continues, and METS Technology has been trusted to outfit the city’s new shuttle ferry with electric hybrid propulsion. The stakeholders are the shipowner, Västtrafik; the shipyard, Uudenkaupungin Työvene Oy; the operator, Styrsöbolaget; the electrical turnkey deliverer, Telesilta Oy; and the system integrator, us, METS Technology!

The new ferry will be the largest hybrid ferry METS have outfitted so far, with a battery energy storage of 1260 kWh. The project fits into the long-term strategy of the city of Gothenburg towards replacing its fleet of ferries with hybrids newbuilds or retrofits, whose electricity will be powered with renewable energy. The reduction of air pollution and GHG emissions will be enormous. What sometimes is missing from hybrid vessels is that even when they run on diesel, they do it in a more favorable operating profile than when they are powered exclusively by diesel. The efficiency, in other words, is even higher, which translates into less fuel consumption.

The hybrid system is based on Danfoss Editron equipment and METS comprehensive automation platform MIAS that comprises advanced Energy Management control and an intuitive and modern design.
