With five vessels now delivered, the Maritime Partner Sjøbjørn 38 programme continues to bolster the Norwegian Coast Guard’s capability in demanding coastal environments
Norwegian vessel designer and builder Maritime Partner has delivered two new Sjøbjørn 38 high-performance patrol boats to the Norwegian Defence Materiel Agency (NDMA) and the Norwegian Coast Guard.
The vessels, Sjøbjørn 38 HPB4 and HPB5, are the latest additions to the new Sjøbjørn 38 series and bring the total number of boats delivered under the programme to five, further strengthening the operational capabilities of Norway’s Inner Coast Guard.
The first vessel in the series was put into operation aboard KV Njord, and the experience gained from its use has provided an important foundation for the further development, adaptation, and operational employment of the subsequent vessels. With these latest deliveries, the boat series is now well integrated into the Coast Guard’s structure.
“These deliveries represent an important next step in our collaboration with the Norwegian Defence Materiel Agency and the Coast Guard. Through this project, we have developed a series of vessels that meets high standards for performance,flexibility, and operational reliability,” says Henrik Myklebust, Vice President Sales at Maritime Partner.
The Sjøbjørn 38 was developed through close cooperation between Maritime Partner and the Norwegian Defence Materiel Agency and represents a modern concept in patrol and work boats for maritime operational use.
The vessels are designed as robust and flexible work platforms that strengthen the Coast Guard’s ability to carry out a wide range of missions—from inspections and law enforcement duties to search and rescue operations. At the same time,they are adapted for seamless integration with the Coast Guard’s existing vessels, including the Nornen class.
“The Sjøbjørn 38 is the result of a close development partnership with the end users. This has enabled us to create a platform that combines high performance,low weight, and long service life, while meeting operational requirements,” says Myklebust.
The new model builds on the experience gained from the smaller Sjøbjørn models and has been further developed into a larger and more capable platform. The result is a fast, stable, and versatile patrol boat tailored for demanding operations along the Norwegian coastline and in northern waters.
The hull is constructed from recycled aluminium, providing high strength combined with low weight and long service life. The choice of material also contributes to a reduced environmental footprint and underscores the company’s commitment to sustainable solutions.
The project illustrates the importance of close cooperation between the Norwegian maritime industry and the defence sector. Throughout the development and delivery phases, experience from operational use has been an important basis for further improvements.
