Five new tugs deployed across Latin America strengthen SAAM Towage’s operational capability and fleet renewal programme
SAAM Towage has strengthened its regional fleet with the addition of five new tugs during 2026, supporting its ongoing fleet renewal programme and expanding operational capabilities across Latin America.
The new vessels have been developed to meet the evolving requirements of the maritime and port industries, combining modern technology with enhanced efficiency, safety and environmental performance.
The five new tugs – Guanay, operating in Peru; Carancho in Chile; Kanan in Mexico; Hunabku in Guatemala; and Caribe in Colombia – have joined the SAAM Towage fleet as the company continues its investment in modernising its operations.
Equipped with engines certified to IMO Tier II and Tier III emissions standards, the vessels are designed to support improved environmental performance while delivering the power required for demanding port and marine operations.
The new tugs provide between 70 and 80 tonnes of bollard pull, while FF1-certified firefighting systems enhance their versatility and enable them to undertake a broader range of medium- and high-complexity operations, including emergency response duties.

With these five vessels, we are not only increasing our operational flexibility at key terminals in the region, but also preparing our fleet to meet the standards that the global industry will demand in the coming decade,” said Pablo Cáceres, Manager of Innovation and New Construction at SAAM Towage.
The fleet renewal process will continue over the coming months, adding new units and reaffirming the company’s commitment to strengthening its leadership in the industry.
