SAAM Towage Expands Fleet with Two New Sanmar Tugs

IMO Tier III-compliant tugboats will enter service in Chile and Mexico, increasing the number of Sanmar-built vessels in the SAAM Towage fleet to fifteen

Sanmar Shipyards has delivered two new IMO Tier III-compliant tugboats to SAAM Towage. The newbuilds, delivered following the successful completion of sea trials at Sanmar’s Altınova shipyard in Türkiye, have been named SAAM CARANCHO and SAAM KANAN. The vessels are destined for operations in Chile and Mexico respectively, where they will support harbour towage services.

The latest handovers increase the number of Sanmar-built tugboats in the SAAM Towage fleet to fifteen, reflecting the operator’s continued investment in modern, lower-emission tug technology and its ongoing confidence in Sanmar’s shipbuilding capabilities.

Designed to meet IMO Tier III emissions standards, the vessels combine advanced propulsion technology with enhanced environmental performance, supporting SAAM Towage’s strategy of operating an increasingly efficient and sustainable fleet across the Americas.

SAAM CARANCHO is a Bigaçay Class escort tug based on the exclusive RAstar 2900SX design developed for Sanmar by internationally renowned Canadian naval architects Robert Allan Ltd. Capable of delivering 80 tonnes of bollard pull and achieving a free-running speed of 12 knots, the vessel has been specifically designed for demanding escort operations in exposed waters where superior seakeeping capabilities are essential. Powered by twin CAT 3516E main engines, each producing 2,350 kW, the tug is also equipped with FiFi 1 firefighting capability.

SAAM KANAN is a Boğaçay Class tug based on the proven RAmparts 2400SX-MKII design by Robert Allan Ltd. Also powered by twin CAT 3516E main engines delivering 2,350 kW each, the highly manoeuvrable twin Z-drive vessel is designed to provide efficient and reliable ship-handling services in busy port environments. The tug is equipped with FiFi 1 firefighting capability and combines operational efficiency with advanced environmental performance.

The partnership between Sanmar and SAAM Towage dates back to 2018 and has continued to grow steadily, reflecting the strong alignment between the two companies in delivering safe, reliable and sustainable towage operations across international markets.

Commenting on the deliveries, Ruchan Civgin, Commercial Director of Sanmar Shipyards, said: “Our partnership with SAAM Towage is built on a foundation of mutual trust, shared values, and a clear vision for a more sustainable maritime industry. These state-of-the-art tugboats, deliver the ideal combination of high-performance capabilities and strict environmental compliance tailored directly to their regional operational needs.”

“At SAAM, we are glad and proud to receive our 15th tugboat from SANMAR, proof of the strong partnership developed with a Builder that shares our vision and essential values. These two tugboats will be assigned to very specific operations in Chile and Mexico where their capabilities, design and SAAM adjustments convert them in tailored solutions for our Operations and Clients requirements.” said Pablo Caceres, Innovation and Newbuilds Director at SAAM Towage.
