Sanmar Shipyards, a leading tug builder based in Türkiye, has announced the successful delivery of one of its best-selling Boğaçay-Class tugs to long-standing Italian customer Rimorchiatori Napoletani. The delivery of ‘GARGANO’ marks another milestone in the partnership between the two companies.
The vessel, originally named BOĞAÇAY LXXX, was renamed GARGANO by its new owners. It is a versatile, diesel-powered multi-purpose tug designed for demanding operations, including ship-handling, coastal towing, escort, and general duties.
Built at Sanmar’s purpose-built, environmentally-friendly shipyard in Türkiye, the tug is based on the RAmparts 2400SX- MKII design, exclusive to Sanmar from acclaimed Canadian naval architects Robert Allan Ltd.
The GARGANO boasts robust performance metrics, achieving a bollard pull over the stern of 70 tons and a free running speed of at least 12.5 knots. Its key specifications include an overall length of 24.4 m and a wide moulded beam of 12 m, the latter of which provides enhanced performance and stability compared to similar-sized tugboats.
Reflecting Sanmar’s dedication to sustainability, the GARGANO is among the most environmentally-friendly tugs in the Boğaçay Class to date. Its green credentials include:
- Tier III compliant main engines.
- A high standard of machinery automation designed to maximize operational efficiency.
Rüçhan Çıvgın, Commercial Director of Sanmar Shipyards, commented on the delivery: “Our latest Boğaçay Class tugs achieve a new level of low-emission, low environmental impact tugboat operation. GARGANO represents the latest in our ongoing drive to drastically reduce the negative environmental impact of the tug and towing industry.”
The delivery reinforces the successful business relationship between the two companies, which began in 2017 with the delivery of the Sirapinar Class tug VIVARA, a slightly smaller sister vessel to the Boğacay series.
Rimorchiatori Napoletani, a distinguished operator whose origins assisting sail-powered ships in the Port of Naples trace back to the last decades of the 19th Century, has continued to modernize its fleet with Sanmar’s innovative designs.
