On Friday, July 4, Remontowa Shipbuilding successfully launched the hybrid passenger-car ferry being built for Norwegian operator Torghatten Nord AS. This milestone marks a significant step forward in the construction of the environmentally focused vessel, scheduled for delivery in the first quarter of 2026.
The ceremony was attended by key representatives of Remontowa Shipbuilding, including CEO Dariusz Jaguszewski, Vice President Bartłomiej Pomierski, B620/1 Project Manager Piotr Alboszta, and Contracting Director Michał Jaguszewski. Representing Torghatten Nord AS were CEO Marius Hansen, CFO Trygve Tofte, broker Jon Staalesen, Norwegian Ship Design CEO Gjermund Johannessen, and Project Manager Tore Heidegard.
“The launch went very smoothly and according to the planned schedule. Currently, the scope of all works on the ship is almost 80 percent advanced and soon we will be preparing the ferry for Harbor Acceptance Tests, which are planned to start in the second half of September” said Piotr Alboszta, Project Manager, Remontowa Shipbuilding.Â
The 63.65-meter-long, 15.50-meter-wide ferry will accommodate 149 people (passengers and crew) and 50 passenger cars. Built under a contract signed in December 2023, the vessel is designed by The Norwegian Ship Design Company AS, with working documentation support provided by Remontowa Marine Design & Consulting.
The design emphasises energy efficiency and sustainability, incorporating lightweight materials and low-loss systems to minimise energy consumption. Propulsion is provided by two azimuth thrusters with vertically mounted electric motors, powered primarily by batteries. These batteries will be recharged from shore power during loading and unloading. Diesel generators will be used only as backup in emergency situations.
Remontowa Shipbuilding and Torghatten Nord AS have been partners since 2009. Between 2012 and 2013, Remontowa delivered four LNG-powered ferries – Landegode, Væroy, Barøy, and Lødingen – for operation in Norway’s Lofoten archipelago.
Torghatten Nord AS currently operates 43 ferry connections and 15 high-speed passenger routes, playing a vital role in connecting communities across Norway.
The new hybrid ferry will operate on the Stornes–Bjørnerå route in the Troms region, covering the distance between ports in under 12 minutes.
