Yanmar-driven research boat on Arctic mission

It has been nearly 1 year ago since Kewatec Shipyards from Finland has delivered a 14-meter work and research boat to Svalbard. This Serecraft S14 is powered by YANMAR and used for research at the world’s northernmost university, the University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS). The engines have been supplied in collaboration with YANMAR’s highly valued dealer from Norway, Martec AS, which is part of Kewatec group and has been tightly involved in the complete project.

Scientistic research

The boat is named after the scientist Hanna Resvoll, who was the first female Arctic scientist in Svalbard, back in 1907. Hanna Resvoll was also a pioneer in environmental protection and was Norway’s first environmentalist.

The boat is out in the field all day and due to its unique design it is easier for the students to stay dry and warm and focus on the work to be done. Data collection can now be done in a safer and more secure way. Hanna Resvoll can accommodate 12 passengers and a crew of three. The boat is being used for mapping the seabed, collecting water samples, inspecting research buoys and transport. It has a larger operating area than the Polar Circle boats and can sail 250 nautical miles without refueling.

Martec AS- from delivery to testing

Martec AS, part of the Kewatec-Group, has been a Yanmar commercial marine dealer since 2016. They perform maintenance and service at Norwegian vessels and deliver genuine spare parts.

For Hanna Resvoll, the reliable team of Martec AS has delivered almost a complete propulsion package consisting of engines, gearboxes, manoeuvre system and dynamic position system. In addition also other equipment was delivered such as navigation, generator, thrusters, etc. Martec AS is a specialist in integrating complete propulsion systems with manoeuvring and DP-systems.

Gisle Johnsen, General Manager of Martec

“This is the second boat Martec delivers to Svalbard. In the past, we have delivered a patrol boat to the Governor of Svalbard (2019) and the latest delivery says Gisle Johnsen, General Manager of Martec.

Our dealer follows up each project from sales to commissioning and on-site testing of the delivered systems and testing under the right whether conditions together with the crew.
