Norwegian shipping company Østensjø Rederi has entered into a newbuilding agreement with Astilleros Gondán in Spain for a next-generation offshore tug set to be delivered in the first quarter of 2028. The offshore tug, based on the Skipsteknisk ST 933 design, will be the largest and most powerful tug ever built for Østensjø Rederi, significantly enhancing the company’s offshore towage capabilities.
With a bollard pull of 150 tonnes and a DP-2 dynamic positioning system, the tug will offer exceptional power, precision, and reliability. A comprehensive winch package enables the tug to perform complex tasks, supporting high operational flexibility.
Equipped with a diesel-electric hybrid propulsion system for fuel-efficient operations and prepared for Methanol fuel, the newbuild is an important step towards more sustainable operations and aligns with Østensjø Rederi’s target of reducing emissions.
“The newbuild represents a major step in further strengthening our offshore towage fleet,” says Kristian Helland Vea, CEO of Østensjø Rederi. “Building on our extensive experience from tug operations, we have focused on developing a tug that delivers both the capacity and reliability required for offshore tug operations, meeting the demands of tomorrow. This tug checks all the boxes, and the combination of high bollard pull, advanced hybrid propulsion, and large winch capacity ensures exceptional operational flexibility and capacity”.
While designed for demanding offshore operations, the tug continues Østensjø Rederi’s focus on crew comfort, featuring high-standard accommodation. Special attention has been given to reducing noise and vibration.
The collaboration between Østensjø Rederi and Astilleros Gondan, and their shared commitment to producing high-quality offshore vessels, has spanned 20 years. Østensjø looks forward to continuing this strong partnership with the construction of a new offshore tug.
The newbuild contract further strengthens Østensjø Rederi’s dedication to maintaining a modern, reliable tug fleet, prepared for the future of offshore operations.
