30-metre electric catamaran will provide fast, zero-emission commuting for pedestrians and cyclists on the River Scheldt
Baltic Workboats has signed a contract with Belgian fleet operator VLOOT DAB for the construction of a 30-metre catamaran passenger ferry, set to operate on the River Scheldt. The new ferry is designed to provide fast, efficient, and zero-emission transport for pedestrians and cyclists, supporting sustainable commuting in one of Belgium’s busiest waterways.
The ferry will feature a fully electric drivetrain, incorporating a Corvus Energy storage system, with Danfoss supplying the hybrid system and electric motors. The vessel is designed to reach a top speed of 18 km/h and will primarily operate at a cruising speed of 14 km/h. At cruising speed, the electric range is up to three hours. Solar panels will be installed to cover auxiliary power consumption and further optimise operating costs.
The catamaran is designed to carry up to 150 passengers and 150 bicycles. An efficient internal layout ensures smooth and rapid boarding and disembarkation at frequent stops. The ferry will also be equipped with Baltic Workboats’ IAMCS (Integrated Automation, Monitoring and Control System), enabling operation with a crew of only three and allowing full control and monitoring of all vessel systems from the wheelhouse.
This 30-meter catamaran will be a sister ship to three similar vessels previously delivered to VLOOT DAB in recent years. Delivery of the new ferry is scheduled for September 2027.
