Brødrene Selects ZEM Battery System for Flagship Fjord Vessel

ZEM will deliver a 1.48 MWh battery system for a new Brødrene Aa-built vessel destined for UNESCO-listed Norwegian fjords

ZEM has secured a contract to supply its LFP Power battery system for a new flagship tourist vessel being built by Norwegian shipbuilder Brødrene Aa for ferry operator The Fjords DA.

The vessel is destined for service in Norway’s UNESCO-listed West Norwegian World Heritage fjords, where new regulations requiring passenger vessels under 10,000 GT to operate with zero emissions came into force on 1 January 2026.

Under the contract, ZEM will deliver a 1,480 kWh (1.48 MWh) LFP Power battery system based on lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry. The system will be configured for Megawatt Charging System (MCS) connectivity, enabling high-power shore charging to support the intensive operating schedules typical of fjord sightseeing services.

The latest award builds on a long-standing collaboration between ZEM and Brødrene Aa, the Hyen-based shipbuilder renowned for its lightweight carbon-fibre passenger vessels. Brødrene Aa has previously delivered several pioneering low- and zero-emission vessels for The Fjords, including Vision of the Fjords, Future of the Fjords and Legacy of the Fjords.

“Delivering our LFP Power system for this vessel reflects the maturity of ZEM’s battery technology for demanding, high-utilization passenger operations. An MCS-ready 1.48 MWh system gives The Fjords the energy and the charging headroom to run a full sightseeing schedule with zero emissions in exactly the waters where it matters most.” — Jonathan Sørbye, CEO, ZEM AS
