‘Burra Sound’ Completes Successful Sea Trials for Scottish Sea Farms

Third vessel for Scottish Sea Farms, Burra Sound passes full trial programme, positioning the vessel as a key asset for Orkney aquaculture operations

The newest vessel to join Scottish Sea Farms’ Orkney fleet, the 2108 Utility Vessel Burra Sound, has successfully completed a full programme of sea trials, confirming strong performance across all operational requirements.

Designed and fitted out by Nauplius Workboats, with the hull constructed by SupTech Construction, this 21 m × 8 m utility vessel has been purpose-engineered to support aquaculture operations in some of the UK’s most challenging marine environments. Trials have demonstrated impressive seakeeping, manoeuvrability, and load-handling capabilities, with the vessel comfortably exceeding 10 knots.

Confirmed performance highlights:

  • 100+ tonnes payload without crane operations
  • 50+ tonnes deck load with crane operations
  • 3,200 kg at 13.4 m crane capacity

Constructed for year-round reliability in the harsh conditions of the Northern Isles, Burra Sound delivers a combination of strength, efficiency and operational versatility. The vessel will play a key role in supporting daily site activities across Scottish Sea Farms’ Orkney region.

With sea trials now concluded, Burra Sound will shortly be formally handed over by Nauplius Workboats, and enter service.
