Three new Platform Supply Vessels will be converted into next-generation cable-laying ships, with entry into service scheduled for early 2028
LD Armateurs (LDA) is strengthening its subsea cable operations with the acquisition of three Platform Supply Vessels (PSVs) for conversion into next-generation cable-laying vessels, alongside the launch of a new training initiative designed to develop the specialist skills required across its growing fleet.
The three PSVs, currently under construction, are scheduled for delivery during the second quarter of 2027. Following delivery, they will be transferred to a specialist conversion yard, where they will be equipped with the systems and technology required for subsea cable installation and repair operations. The vessels are expected to enter service in early 2028.
Each vessel will have a cable-carrying capacity of 2,800 tonnes and will be configured to undertake a wide range of operations, from subsea cable installation and repair to complex projects requiring operational flexibility and rapid response capabilities.
The new vessels will also incorporate hybrid-electric propulsion systems, designed to improve energy efficiency and reduce CO₂ emissions.
“Building on 25 years of experience in the installation and repair of subsea telecommunications cables on behalf of our clients, LD Armateurs has decided to invest in its own fleet of next-generation cable vessels. Our ambition is to support the sustained growth of the telecommunications sector, help address critical infrastructure sovereignty challenges, and proactively meet the modernization needs of a global fleet facing both aging assets and capacity constraints” said Samira Draoua, Chief Executive Officer of LD Armateurs.
Alongside its investment in fleet expansion, LDA is launching the LDA Academy to support the growth of its cable business, the introduction of three new methanol and wind-powered RoRo vessels, and the development of the next generation of maritime professionals.
The Academy will provide a structured framework for recruiting, training and developing future crews, helping to ensure the availability of specialist personnel as the company’s operations expand.
“This investment, both technological and human, marks an important step in the Group’s growth strategy by strengthening its position across the entire subsea telecommunications cable systems value chain,” concluded Samira Draoua.
