13.5-tonne HS.MARINE crane undergoes full strip-down, rebuild and 120% load test
Marine Cranes has successfullly completed a major overhaul of an HS.MARINE AKC 155 HE4 crane installed aboard Carmet Tug Company’s Damen Shoalbuster CT Prenton, with the vessel now back in operation following its scheduled drydock.
Working within the constraints of the vessel’s busy deployment schedule, the 13.5-tonne crane was removed at Williams Shipping’s Southampton marine base before being transported to Marine Cranes’ workshop for a full strip-down, inspection and overhauled.
The comprehensive scope of work included structural bolt replacement, detailed assessment of key components and steelwork, and refurbishment or replacement of hydraulic cylinders, including re-chroming. Engineers also carried out full hydraulic hose replacement and system re-tubing, alongside load valve renewal, electrical system overhaul and winch servicing.
Surface preparation and protection works included bead blasting and repainting where required, while the standing platform and control station were remanufactured. The crane was subsequently subjected to a 120% load test prior to reinstallation.
Now 18 years old, the AKC 155 HE4 has benefited from a significant life extension through the overhaul programme, underlining the durability of HS.MARINE’s original design and build quality.
With a maximum reach of 15.07 m at 6,300 kg, the crane remains a capable asset for CT Prenton, which has returned to supporting operations across the UK and Europe.
“It takes a village to overhaul a crane of this size, and we would like to thank Carmet Tug Company, and our project partners for their cooperation throughout the project,” said Ben Pym, Managing Director Marine Cranes
