Marine Renewables Canada (MRC) has appointed Sustainable Marine CEO Jason Hayman to its Board of Directors as it accelerates work nationwide.
Mr Hayman will provide his unique perspective and experience, having delivered a wide range of innovative maritime projects over the last 25 years, to support the leadership of the association.
“To be counted among those industry leaders on the MRC board is a tremendous honour and a great opportunity to be a part of renewable energy history in Canada and Nova Scotia,” he said. “As a marine energy solutions provider, we are looking to embrace the region’s pioneering spirit and heritage of harnessing its natural assets to rapidly advance the future energy transition. The race to net-zero is well and truly on, and we must now work both collectively and tirelessly to meet ambitious targets and ultimately avert the climate crisis.”
MRC executive director Elisa Obermann said Canada’s marine renewable energy resources have enormous potential to deliver on economic recovery and net-zero targets, but much work is required to address challenges and advance the sector.
“We are committed to building and supporting this new industry and to do that we need leadership that is diverse, skilled, and dedicated to the mission,” she said. “That’s why I am pleased to announce the appointment of new directors to our board bringing capabilities and experience benefiting the association and the sector.”
A Naval Architect by trade, Mr Hayman started working on deployment solutions for instream tidal energy devices in 2007, resulting in the successful installation of Voith Hydro’s first-generation, bottom-mounted tidal turbine, in Korea, in 2010.
He later founded Sustainable Marine in 2012 with a clear mission; to develop and deliver a reliable and cost-effective marine energy systems that are easy to install and maintain.
The firm’s growing team located in Germany, Scotland, and Nova Scotia, installed an innovative floating tidal energy platform fulfilling this objective, called PLAT-I, in Grand Passage, Nova Scotia, in 2018.
Following the successful installation of a second platform in Canadian waters, Sustainable Marine is now ramping up to deliver the world’s first floating tidal array at the Fundy Ocean Research Centre for Energy (FORCE).
Mr Hayman is joined by two other new MRC board members Mary Lou Lauria from Advisian and Sarah Thomas from DP Energy. Their directorship terms began on January 1, 2022.
A new executive committee has also been established, with Peter Huttges of Atlantic Towing appointed as Chairman of the board and John Wright of Northland Power appointed to the role of Vice Chair.
