Project supports zero-emission vessel operations through advanced shore charging infrastructure
PSW Power & Automation has entered into a new agreement with Plug – Shore Power & Maritime Charging for the delivery of an 8.3MWh battery-integrated Megawatt Charging System (MCS) to support zero emission fast ferries operations.
The high-capacity charging solution is designed to enable rapid vessel turnaround while maintaining grid stability, addressing key bottlenecks in the electrification of high-speed maritime transport.
PSW has a unique integrated charging solution combining a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) with a smart energy management system. This coordinate approach optimises energy supply, storage, and consumption – enhancing grid flexibility while ensuring reliable and efficient charging for Zero emission vessels.
The solution will be located in Geiranger, a site on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. This marks an important step toward greener maritime operations and supports the transition to zero-emission vessels while helping preserve a unique and protected natural environment. By combining shore power with battery storage, the system ensures a flexible and robust energy supply while reducing strain on the local grid.
“This contract represents an important confirmation of our role in the maritime energy transition. Building on our proven delivery of shore power and grid‑connected energy storage solutions, we are strengthening a partnership that is already driving measurable impact. The continued trust from our customer underscores the value of our expertise and the relevance of our technology in addressing grid capacity challenges and enabling sustainable maritime electrification. We see this as a strong indicator of further opportunities ahead,” says Jens Hjorteset, Director of Business Development, PSW Power & Automation.
“Plug is at the forefront of investing, building and operating shore power and maritime charging solutions for all types of vessels. This project will demonstrate the effectiveness of battery-electric propulsion for ferries, fast ferries, other passenger vessels and RIB’s, and we look forward to working with PSW on this project.” says Steinar Iversen, Business Development Manager, Plug.
