Sanmar Delivers Two Advanced Tractor Tugs to Svitzer for Bahrain Operations

Sanmar Shipyards has delivered two new, high-performance azimuth tractor tugs, the Svitzer Manama and Svitzer Awal, to global towage operator and long-term customer Svitzer. Both vessels will operate in Bahrain, supporting port and terminal operations in the region.

Built to the TRAktor-Z 2500SX design, developed exclusively for Sanmar by Canadian naval architects Robert Allan Ltd. The tugs combine compact dimensions with outstanding manoeuvrability and power. Each vessel measures 25.3 metres in length, with a 12-metre moulded beam, 4.45-metre moulded depth, and a maximum draft of approximately 6.55 metres.

Both Svitzer Manama and Svitzer Awal tugs are capable of achieving a minimum of 80 tonnes of bollard pull and has a free-running speed of 12.5 knots. Both vessels are also equipped with Fi-Fi 1 system, further enhancing their operational capabilities and safety performance.

The twin Z-drive propeller tugs have been primarily designed for both harbour ship handling and towing duties.

The tractor tugs benefit from being efficient, highly controllable, and manoeuvrable due to a modern hull form and appendage configuration, which is the result of significant effort in model testing and computer-based computational fluid dynamics optimisation during the design process.

Sanmar has had a long commercial relationship with Svitzer dating back almost 20 years, which includes many of the most innovative new technologies to appear during the ongoing development of tug design.

These include the World’s First Remotely Operated tug “SVITZER HERMOD” delivered in 2016 and the revolutionary emissions-free all-electric tug “SVITZER INGRID” from the exclusive-to-Sanmar ElectRA series, delivered earlier this year.

İpek Gürün, Corporate Strategy Director of Sanmar Shipyards, said: “Svitzer operates on a massive scale in 141 ports and 40 terminals across 37 countries with maritime experience that goes back centuries; so, we are delighted that they once again choose Sanmar to provide the modern, technologically-advanced, efficient, and environmentally responsible tugboats they need to bolster their global operations.”
