Aluminium patrol boats designed by Southerly Designs and classed by Bureau Veritas enter the water for the first time at the SECO’s Mombasa shipyard.
Southern Engineering Co. Ltd (SECO), a Kenya-based marine and offshore engineering services company, has launched two 16.3m aluminium patrol boats under construction for the Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) at its Mombasa shipyard.
The vessels — TPA Lindo 1, destined for Dar es Salaam, and TPA Lindo 2, which will operate from Mwanza — were formally christened before entering the water for the first time, marking a key milestone in the build programme.
Designed by Southerly Designs and classed by Bureau Veritas, the patrol boats feature 16.3m aluminium hulls and are powered by twin Caterpillar engines driving Kongsberg Kamewa waterjets. The propulsion configuration is expected to deliver a top speed of around 35 knots.
According to SECO, the patrol boats are being constructed entirely in Kenya by locally based technicians and craftsmen, reflecting the continued development of indigenous shipbuilding capability within the region.
Once completed and delivered, the patrol boats will support the Tanzania Ports Authority’s maritime safety, port security and patrol operations at two of Tanzania’s key maritime hubs.
