Steel cutting ceremony launches construction of an environmentally advanced TSHD 1000 trailing suction hopper dredger for UK Dredging
Ha Long Shipyard has marked the start of construction on a new THSD 1000 trailing suction hopper dredger with a steel cutting ceremony held on 1 July 2026. The event was attended by representatives from vessel owner UK Dredging, Damen and classification society Bureau Veritas (BV), underlining the close collaboration between the project partners as the vessel moves into the construction phase.
Based on the Damen TSHD 1000 design, the 60-metre dredger has been customised to meet UK Dredging’s specific operational requirements. Once delivered, the vessel will support maintenance dredging operations at ports across the United Kingdom, with entry into service expected in 2028.
UK Dredging is responsible for providing essential dredging services across ports and waterways throughout the United Kingdom. The dredger will play a crucial role in maintaining navigational depths and supporting safe, efficient vessel access to ABP’s ports.
The vessel will be fitted with a diesel-electric propulsion system incorporating an energy storage system, as well as a Damen aftertreatment ULEV‑compliant exhaust system featuring SCR and DPF filters, aligning with the latest environmental standards in the maritime industry. The 60‑metre vessel will also be equipped with an electrically driven grab crane.
Ha Long Shipyard said the steel cutting ceremony marks an important milestone for the project and thanked UK Dredging, Damen and Bureau Veritas for their continued trust and cooperation as construction progresses towards delivery.
