Southampton-based Marine Cranes supplies, installs and commissions new HS.Marine AK 30 HE4 aboard ABP workboat Spartina
Associated British Ports (ABP) has strengthened the marine capability of the Port of Southampton with the installation of a new deck crane aboard Spartina, one of the port’s operational workboats.
The new HS.Marine AK 30 HE4 crane was supplied, installed and commissioned by Southampton-based specialist Marine Cranes, replacing the vessel’s existing crane after reaching the end of its operational life.
Associated British Ports (ABP), the UK’s largest port operator, has invested a new marine deck crane aboard Spartina, one of the Port of Southampton’s operational workboats, strengthening the port’s marine capability and supporting safe, efficient operations across the harbour.
A new HS.Marine AK 30 HE4 deck crane was supplied, installed and commissioned aboard Spartina by Southampton-based specialist Marine Cranes, replacing the vessel’s existing crane at the end of its operational life.
The project showcased the strength and breadth of the Solent maritime supply chain, with specialist support provided by several local businesses across fabrication, naval architecture and marine survey services.
Marine Cranes developed a bespoke adaptor solution, enabling the new crane to be installed using existing foundation and bolting features to avoid any structural modification to the vessel.
The new crane provides a safe working load of 1,050kg at a maximum outreach of 14.66 metres and incorporates a range of features designed specifically for demanding marine environments, including hydraulically continuous slew capability, radio remote control and a flame-metallised finish for long-term corrosion protection.
Following installation, the crane was load tested to 125% of its safe working load onboard Spartina, witnessed by the certifying authority surveyor and the vessel’s Master.
