Abyss Invests in Two High-Tech Hybrid Green Aquaculture Workboats

Abyss, a leading provider of service vessels and subsea services, announce a major stride in its sustainability mission with the signing of a contract for two cutting-edge, battery hybrid aquaculture workboats. This investment underscores the company’s dedication to reducing environmental impact while enhancing operational efficiency in the aquaculture industry. The vessels will be constructed by Vaagland Båtbyggeri, a renowned Norwegian shipyard with a proven track record in building high-quality, specialised marine vessels

“With these vessels, we strengthen our position as a forward-looking and environmentally conscious player in the aquaculture industry. It is not just about vessels, but about delivering safer, more efficient and sustainable services to our customers”, says Victor Jensen, CEO of Abyss.

The two new vessels are part of Abyss’ long-term strategy to modernize its fleet and reduce its environmental footprint. The company has set a goal of reducing CO₂ emissions by 20% by 2030, and investment in hybrid technology is a key tool in this effort.

“We are building a fleet for the future – and we are doing it with partners who share our vision of quality, innovation and environmental responsibility. These vessels make us even better equipped to meet customer needs and future demands,” says Jensen.

The hybrid vessels will contribute to lower emissions, less noise and higher energy efficiency. At the same time, Abyss will gain increased flexibility and capacity for 24/7 operation – especially important in an industry with ever-increasing demands for precision, sustainability and reliability.

The vessels, building numbers 160 and 162, have been developed in collaboration with Progreen AS. With a length of 28.9 meters and a width of 12.6 meters, each boat will have a battery pack of 1051 kWh and complete deck equipment, including two powerful cranes. The hulls will be built in Poland and outfitted at Vaagland’s shipyard in Nordmøre.

We are very pleased to be trusted to build these vessels for Abyss. It is a customer with high ambitions and clear requirements. With our covered dock and use of local suppliers, we will deliver vessels with high quality and a low environmental footprint,” says Gunnar Arnold Norbø, CEO of Vaagland Båtbyggeri.

Steel cutting is scheduled to begin in August 2025, with delivery in the first quarter of 2027.
