BOS Power Battery Electric Propulsion System for New Ferry

BOS Power, a system integrator specialising in energy-efficient propulsion solutions for the marine industry, announce that it has signed a contract with Fjellstrand to supply a complete battery-electric propulsion system for a new 55-meter electric catamaran ferry. This partnership highlights BOS Power’s expertise as a full system integrator, delivering the entire propulsion line from bridge to propeller.

The vessel, designed by Fjellstrand, will be operated by Gulen Skyss AS outside the city of Bergen on Norway’s west coast between Breistein and Valestrand. Scheduled to commence service November 29th 2027, the ferry will carry 50 PBE, cruising at 11 knots.

As a system integrator, BOS Power will deliver the complete electric power system and advanced bridge control systems including automation, ensuring seamless integration and optimal performance.

The vessel is designed for low energy consumption and 100% electric operation, with a strong environmental focus.

“BOS Power’s advisory throughout the process and their experience with energy-efficient propulsion systems have greatly contributed to our project. Optimising the energy and propulsion design, without compromising performance and reliability are some of the most important criteria both for us as a yard and for the operator”, says Olav Lie, Sales Manager at Fjellstrand.

This three-way collaboration shows a close partnership between the shipyard, the shipowner, and BOS Power, with BOS Power acting as a trusted advisor throughout the development process. Gulen Skyss, a part of InfraRed Capital Partners infrastructure, is committed to sustainable and efficient maritime operations.

“As we move forward with the order of our new electric ferry, we want to acknowledge the
outstanding support we’ve received from both the system integrator BOS Power and Fjellstrand. Their technical insight, responsiveness, and professionalism have been essential in guiding us through the decision-making process. This partnership gives us great optimism for the future, and we look forward to bringing this next-generation ferry into service!”, states Frode Sønstabø , CEO at Gulen Skyss.

“As a system integrator, we ensure all components work together seamlessly, enabling higher energy efficiency, lower emissions, and greater value for our customer. We are both pleased and humbled by the trust placed in us to supply both the integration package for the vessel and the shore charging facility”, says Martin Viksund, Senior Sales Manager at BOS Power

“This approach is central to how we aim to secure and execute future contracts, supporting the future of sustainable passenger transport”, says Frode Skaar, Sales and Marketing Director at BOS Power.

“Our collaboration with BOS Power has been vital in achieving a propulsion system that meets the highest standards of safety and environmental performance. Together, we are setting a new standard for maritime innovation”, states Hans Martin Gravdal, CEO at Fjellstrand.
