Finnøy Gear & Propeller has been awarded a contract with Moen Marin and AQS AS. The agreement entails the conversion of three sister ships, namely AQS Tor, Namdal, and Troll, from fossil propulsion to hybrid propulsion.
AQS, a prominent player in the industry, operates a fleet of 14 vessels and employs approximately 130 personnel, positioning them as one of the largest service companies in the sector. This extensive reconstruction, facilitated by the integration of DNV-type-approved batteries for maritime use supplied by Norwegian companies ZEM Energy and Moen Marin, will effectively hybridize the vessels and significantly reduce their emissions.
The battery installation, boasting a capacity of 564 kWh per boat, represents a compact and space-efficient solution. This enhancement empowers AQS to operate the ships with both hybrid and all-electric propulsion, whether in transit or within their facilities. Notably, the project involves the incorporation of a new gear system and an electric motor, seamlessly integrated into the existing power supply infrastructure. Consequently, this innovative transformation will lead to considerable reductions in diesel consumption, as well as a marked decrease in operational noise, benefiting both crew members, fish farmers, and the marine life in the vicinity.
Prior to this contract, Finnøy Gear & Propeller had supplied the three sister ships, namely AQS Tor, Namdal, and Troll, with gear systems of the Finnøy G42FK type and four-bladed propellers. Making a forward-thinking choice in autumn 2021, AQS opted for their last service boat to be equipped with traditional propulsion, thereby emphasizing their commitment to sustainability and the reuse and conversion of existing vessels.
In light of the global shift away from fossil fuels, stable electric and hybrid solutions have emerged as the future of maritime propulsion. Finnøy Gear & Propeller is delighted to collaborate closely with AQS, as this solution represents a significant advancement in the vessels’ operational capabilities and sustainability practices. The successful execution of this contract stands as a testament to the company’s expertise and dedication to meeting the evolving needs of the maritime industry.
