Finnøy Secures Propulsion Contract for Wilson ASA’s New Cargo Fleet

Finnøy Gear & Propeller AS today announced a significant contract to supply complete propulsion systems for eight new cargo vessels ordered by Norwegian shipping giant Wilson ASA. The vessels will be constructed at Udupi Cochin Shipyard Ltd. in India, based on an advanced design from Dutch naval architects Conoship International. The project marks an important collaboration between Norwegian maritime technology, European ship design, and Asian shipbuilding resources.

Finnøy’s delivery includes a “twin in – single out” 2G42-60F gearbox system, P78 controllable pitch propeller systems with a 3.6-meter nozzle, and the fifth generation of their remote control system. Equipment will be delivered over a three-year period from 2025 to 2027. This is a comprehensive and strategically important export contract for Finnøy and highlights the company’s position as a supplier of reliable and robust propulsion solutions in the international market.

“That a company like Wilson ASA chooses to invest in Norwegian technology and production for this project is a clear recognition of the quality and reliability found in the product lines developed at Finnøy. Especially in a market characterized by intense competition and rapid technological development, it is crucial to offer reliable, cost-effective, and future-oriented solutions,” says Nils Erling Finnøy, CEO of Finnøy.

Wilson ASA is headquartered in Bergen and operates one of Europe’s largest short sea fleets, with around 140 vessels in active service. The company has long been a significant provider in bulk transport along the European coastline, placing strong emphasis on long-term investments in efficient and sustainable tonnage.

With over 140 years of experience in developing and manufacturing propulsion systems, Finnøy Gear & Propeller has delivered equipment to a wide range of vessels globally—offshore, fisheries, aquaculture, yachts, research vessels, and ferries. The company is known for technological precision, customized solutions, and long equipment lifespan.

In addition to Finnøy’s delivery, Norwegian Electric Systems has been chosen as the system integrator for the vessels. Together, the project represents a robust value chain with Norwegian technology and expertise at its core. The comprehensive solution contributes to increased energy efficiency, reduced maintenance needs, and readiness for future environmental requirements.

The construction at Udupi Cochin Shipyard Ltd. reflects a growing trend in which European shipping companies collaborate with Asian shipyards to build standardized vessel series. That the propulsion systems are supplied by Norwegian technology providers emphasizes Norway’s strong position in maritime technology and sustainable solutions. This project illustrates how Norwegian industry contributes to low-emission vessels and energy efficiency in global shipping.

“The project is an example of how high-tech Norwegian solutions play a central role in the green transition of the shipping industry. Through collaboration with shipping companies and shipyards across different parts of the world, Norwegian companies contribute to the development of more sustainable and efficient sea transport,” says Nils Erling Finnøy.

Finnøy Gear & Propeller will be present at Nor-Shipping 2025 at stand E04-14, where company representatives will be ready to meet customers, partners, and other stakeholders. CEO Nils Erling Finnøy, along with Sales Manager Arne Kristian Nogva and Marketing Manager Norunn Finnøy, will be available to present the company’s solutions, discuss ongoing and upcoming projects, and share insights into developments in maritime propulsion technology.
