Seaspan ULC, a Canada-based shipping group, is awaiting delivery of three new, state-of-the-art 7600 m3 Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) bunkering vessels protected by Marioff HI-FOG® water mist system. A high-pressure water mist system was required to protect the vessel’s hybrid propulsion battery system from fire, as battery storage systems present a unique fire hazard that need dedicated fire suppression solutions. Marioff, a leading developer of water mist fire protection technology, is a part of Carrier Global Corporation (NYSE: CARR), global leader in intelligent climate and energy solutions.
The new bunkering vessels are designed for ship-to-ship LNG transfer, with an emphasis on using emerging technologies, increasing electric storage system capacity, and reducing operational emissions. Its dedicated battery compartment will accommodate a 2MWh capacity. The HI-FOG system designed for the space will include a high-pressure pump unit, a freshwater supply pump, and an easy-to-use control panel – as well as all necessary accessories, fire detector, and alarm.
The HI-FOG system has been extensively tested for marine applications – with a range of type approvals from major classification societies like DNV (Det Norske Veritas), ABS (American Bureau of Shipping), and Lloyd’s register – as well as for battery storage systems. The HI-FOG high-pressure water mist system controls and suppresses fire by discharging a fine water mist at high velocity, rapidly cooling batteries, combusting materials, and ambient gases, thus preventing thermal runaway.
