Ocean Signal Launches Most Advanced Man Overboard Locator Device

Ocean Signal, a leader in safety-at-sea technology, unveils the SafeSEA M200, its most advanced Class-M approved Man Overboard Locator Device (MOB). This cutting-edge AIS transmitter sets a new benchmark for efficiency, reliability, and rapid emergency response.

Incorporating various advanced technologies to enhance distress alerting capabilities while maintaining its compact form and function, the M200 device answers to the latest European Union maritime safety regulations, effective from December 31st, 2024.

The device supports multiple distress signalling methods, including AIS (Automatic Identification System), DSC (digital selective calling) technology, and the 121.5MHz frequency for enhanced local homing.

Within 25 seconds of activation, the M200 transmits a DSC GMDSS MOB alert and then sends eight AIS messages repeated every minute. The 121.5MHz homing signal is transmitted when the M200 is not waiting for a DSC acknowledgement. This maximises the available radio technologies for a local rescue. Once a GNSS fix has been obtained, the device will broadcast the survivor’s precise coordinates to aid search and rescue operations swiftly.

“Safety on the water is a non-negotiable,” says Mikele D’Arcangelo, Vice President of Global Marketing and Product Management.

“In emergency situations where every second matters, lives depend on reliable and efficient technology. The SafeSEA M200 combines the latest in distress alert technology with a robust design and functionality to operate in the toughest maritime working conditions. It’s another big step forward in personal safety devices for both professional and recreational users.”

The SafeSEA M200, which can be fitted into a lifejacket and activate automatically upon inflation, also includes a double visible distress alerting feature via infrared and strobe lights. Improving the survivor’s visibility, this feature ensures maximum detection by emergency services in low-light and night-time conditions. NFC (Near Field Communication) technology built into the device enables users to program their own MMSI and monitor usage data, such as battery life and self-test history, via the Ocean Signal app .

Built to meet the latest European Regulation (ECC/DEC/(22)02) which has been enacted to address AIS congestion, the robust device utilises the DSC channel to ensure critical distress calls are communicated efficiently to rescue authorities, AIS 1 & 2 for accurate up to date location and 121.5MHz homer for traditional radio location along with day and night vision lights for visual detection.

The SafeSEA M200 is a vital tool in accelerating man overboard rescue operations and reaffirms Ocean Signals commitment to safeguarding lives at sea, serving the needs of recreational boaters, professional mariners, and offshore workers.
