Safehaven Marine Wins Uruguay Pilot Boat Order

The contract will mark Safehaven Marine’s sixth Interceptor 60 Pilot and its 70th pilot boat delivered worldwide

Safehaven Marine has signed a newbuild contract with Uruguay-based pilotage operator NEWLAR S.A., headquartered in Montevideo, for an 18m Interceptor 60 Pilot, with delivery scheduled for early 2028

The contract marks the second pilot vessel NEWLAR has commissioned from the Irish shipbuilder, following the delivery of the 15m Interceptor 48 Pilot Belgrano in 2020. The vessel has since provided six years of reliable service supporting pilotage operations on the River Plate.

For its latest vessel, NEWLAR has selected Safehaven Marine’s larger Interceptor 60 Pilot design, powered by twin Volvo Penta D13 marine diesel engines.

The selection follows the recent launch of Ederra 8, another Interceptor 60 Pilot built by Safehaven Marine for the MVD Pilots Association in Montevideo. The vessel has demonstrated the capabilities of the design, combining build quality, performance and seakeeping with fuel efficiency.

At a cruising speed of 24 knots, Ederra 8 reportedly consumes just 168 litres of fuel per hour, highlighting the efficiency of Safehaven Marine’s proven hull design for an 18m pilot vessel.

Commenting on LinkedIn, Frank Kowalski, Managing Director of Safehaven Marine, said: “We very much look forward to building NEWLARs new pilot vessel, which is scheduled for delivery in early 2028. The new vessel will represent another significant milestone for Safehaven Marine, becoming our sixth Interceptor 60 Pilot built and our 70th pilot vessel delivered worldwide.“
