UK Consortium to develop Ultra-Efficient Electric Boats

Teignbridge Propellers announce the collaboration with Optima Electric Yachts on the pioneering Ultra-Efficient Electric Boat project, funded by the Department for Transport (DfT), United Kingdom, and Innovate UK.

This initiative marks the fourth phase of the government’s Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition (CMDC-4), aiming to foster clean maritime technologies. The project is dedicated to advancing the decarbonisation of the maritime industry, bolstering employment in coastal communities, and stimulating economic growth.

David Kendall, CEO of Optima, has spearheaded a partnership with industry-leading specialists to drive this project forward. The collaboration includes Seabird Technologies, renowned for their groundbreaking work on the foiling electric race boat E1 series; Teignbridge Propellers, a leader in propulsion design and manufacturing in the UK; Edwards & Renouf, who have pioneered a biocide-free marine coating; and Rob Watson, the founder of On The Layline Ltd, who will lend his expertise in project management.

Leveraging the success of Teignbridge’s initial project in the first round of CMDC, we are now focusing on developing a high-efficiency propeller design tailored for electric propulsion systems. This project will allow us and our partners to explore and refine further advancements in sustainability, such as ultra-efficient propeller technology, low-friction antifoul coatings, and foil assistance, all aimed at enhancing the efficiency of the electric vessel industry.

David Kendall, CEO of Optima, shared his enthusiasm about the project’s potential, stating: “The increased efficiencies developed during the project will keep us ahead of our competitors in terms of energy efficiency and range and enable our 13m electric vessels to be ready for production in 2025”.
