Vestland County Council Funds Ocean Hyway Cluster’s Retrofit Project

Vestland County Council grants 1,3 million NOK to Ocean Hyway Cluster’s retrofit project.

The retrofit project aims to reduce emissions by lowering the threshold for adopting zero-emission fuels through vessel retrofit. Ocean Hyway Cluster and the 17 project partners will focus on the ripple effects of retrofitting offshore vessels in the Vestland County of Norway.

The project goal is to identify: 1) Investment and operating costs, 2) Fuel availability, export potential, and infrastructure needs and 3) Positive ripple effects, green job creation, and value addition to the county.

18 project partners

The project partners include stakeholders from the entire value chain and aim to strengthen all aspects for faster emissions reduction in the maritime sector. Ocean Hyway Cluster looks forward to the collaboration with these highly relevant players:

Norway and Vestland have a unique position

By retrofitting existing vessels to operate on zero-emission fuels we can reduce emissions from the maritime industry while creating value throughout the value chain. However, there are many uncertainties related to cost, fuel, and infrastructure availability making it challenging to create robust value chains and first movers. Norway and Vestland have a unique position to build these value chains with long traditions in the maritime and oil & gas industry, strong capable shipyards, suppliers, and technology developers.  By leveraging this competence and infrastructure there is a potential for creating new green jobs, products, and services for export and added value to local communities.

The project is limited to the offshore supply vessel segment. This has been identified as a segment with great potential for large-scale benefits with many offshore-related activities dominating the ports and supply bases in Vestland.
