Alfons Håkans Strengthens Fleet with Ice Class Tug AJAX

Alfons Håkans has strengthened its fleet with the new low-emission Ice Class Tug AJAX. Alfons Håkans is a Finnish, sixth-generation family-owned shipping company with over 100 years of experience. AJAX enhances their position as a leading private provider of towing, ice breaking and salvage services in the Baltic Sea region.

The tug AJAX will operate under the Finnish flag as part of Alfons Håkans’ tugboat fleet. With a bollard pull of 60 tons, AJAX is among the most powerful tugboats in Finland. It complies with IMO Tier III emission standards and is equipped with a Fi-Fi 1 firefighting system, enabling it to extinguish even large-scale ship fires.

AJAX is built at Sanmar Shipyards, with the design work led by the Canadian firm Robert Allan Ltd. It is part of the TundRA 2600 Ice Class IA ASD tugboat series. Alfons Håkans, Sanmar Shipyards, and Robert Allan Ltd have collaborated closely for years to develop top-tier tugboats such as Helios and Selene for the demanding conditions of the Baltic Sea. The tugboat Selene, delivered to Alfons Håkans in 2021, won the internationally acclaimed Baird Maritime shipbuilding competition in the “Best Ice Class Tug” category.

AJAX meets the requirements of Finnish Ice Class 1A and is designed to operate in even the most challenging ice conditions.

“AJAX is one of the most advanced tugboats operating in the Baltic Sea. By continuously developing and improving our fleet, we strengthen our commitment to ensuring safe and efficient port calls for merchant vessels in Finland, as a critical contributor to national security of supply” says Jussi Keveri, CEO of Alfons Håkans.
