Brunvoll Propulsion For Two Live Fish Carriers

Brunvoll, Sølvtrans, and Aas Mek. Verksted, work together once more to construct two live fish carriers, marking vessel No. 21 and 22 in their collaboration. The new vessels will feature complete propulsion and manoeuvring systems from Brunvoll.

The propulsion and manoeuvring systems for the vessels consists of three tunnel thrusters, a controllable pith propeller connected to a reduction gearbox, Brunvoll’s Propulsion and ThrusterControl system (BruCon PTC), and Brunvoll’s own variable frequency drives.

“Sølvtrans, with the world’s largest fleet of live fish carriers, is committed to leading the industry in fish quality and welfare. A key component in achieving this goal is our propulsion system, which demands top-tier technology, reliability, and service when transporting live animals. This is why we have chosen Brunvoll for so many of our vessels.

At Sølvtrans, our strategy is to create local jobs and add value by supporting local businesses. For instance, 70% of the equipment for our new vessels is sourced from Norwegian suppliers, and Brunvoll exemplifies the world-class supplier industry that we surround ourselves with,” says Harald Tom Nesvik, Head of Communications at Sølvtrans.

Sølvtrans has the largest fleets of live fish carriers in the world and has been a pioneer of the industry since they were established in 1986. Today, Sølvtrans employs over 700 employees and operates a fleet of 42 vessels world wide. Mainly in Norway, Iceland, Canada, Tasmania, and the United Kingdom.

These live fish carriers are specially developed for carrying young salmon or trout to the floating fish farms for their first deployments into the sea. These young fishes are fragile and has to be handles gently. Furthermore, the vessel will be of AAS 3002 design with a length of 70 meters and a loading capacity of 2580 deadweight tons.

Aas Mek. Verksted AS is Brunvoll’s closest shipyard in distance from Brunvoll with only 8 nautical miles door to door. Brunvoll has the last 17 years delivered propulsion and maneuvering systems for 20 vessels in total for Sølvtrans AS at Aas Mek.

Frode Johan Aas, CEO at Aas Mek. Verksted, on why they chose Brunvoll and the future ahead: “We believe Sølvtrans chose us based on quality, and it is the same reason why we chose Brunvoll. We value not only the quality of the products Brunvoll delivers but also the support and documentation provided for designing and building the vessel.

The frustration regarding the Norwegian government salmon-tax has started to pass. We are now, finally, starting to build live fish carriers again, and we believe that the future for Aas looks promising.”

Brunvoll has developed a lot during the past couple of decades, and an important factor of this journey has been returning customers. With a remarkable list of 21 vessels, it goes without saying that Aas and Sølvtrans are important partners for Brunvoll.
