Case Study: Toei Reefer Line Enhances Life and Operations at Sea with NexusWave

Toei Reefer Line is rolling out Inmarsat Maritime’s NexusWave bonded connectivity service to enhance crew welfare and unlock smarter digital operations during long voyages.

Inmarsat Maritime’s customer, Toei Reefer Line operates high-tech factory vessels that process and store premium sashimi-grade tuna in extreme conditions. With vessels spending months at sea in some of the world’s most isolated waters, the need for reliable, high-speed connectivity has become critical, not just for operational oversight, but for crew morale too.

For Toei Reefer Line, maintaining the quality of its sashimi-grade tuna is key. Its fleet of factory vessels must maintain peak performance across all operations – from deep-freeze storage at -55°C to highly specialised onboard processing – while spending months at sea, far from any port.

That means reliable, high-speed connectivity isn’t a luxury, it’s essential.

To support its crews and enable more advanced, data-driven operations, the Tokyo-based company turned to NexusWave, Inmarsat Maritime’s fully managed bonded connectivity solution.

Already installed on half of its fleet, NexusWave is already delivering clear value.

A new kind of maritime connectivity

Unlike traditional maritime services that rely on a single network, NexusWave combines multiple technologies – GX Ka-band, LEO, LTE, and L-band – into a single bonded connection. This approach allows vessels to:

  • Access unlimited data and high-speed internet
  • Seamlessly support real-time monitoring of onboard systems and remote troubleshooting

The difference is already being felt by the crew onboard. One crew member described how they can now stay in touch with family and unwind with entertainment anytime: “We can communicate with our family and enjoy entertainment anytime, anywhere – and refresh our mind, especially during long voyages.”

Better connectivity, smarter operations

Beyond morale, Toei Reefer Line is using NexusWave to streamline its operations. The bonded service supports real-time monitoring, cloud-based applications and even video diagnostics to quickly share equipment issues with shore-based teams and manufacturers.

IT Director Mr Shinobu Iijima notes, “It has been a long-held desire of our company and seafarers to implement fixed-rate, high-speed communications at sea. High-speed communication will become an indispensable part of the ship’s infrastructure in the future.”
