Holland Shipyards Group proudly announces the delivery of “H2 Barge 2”, its second hydrogen-powered vessel, to Future Proof Shipping. This comes shortly after the successful delivery of the first vessel, “H2 Barge 1”, early in 2023. The completion of “H2 Barge 2” underscores our commitment to guiding the maritime industry towards more sustainable options, showcasing our innovation and expertise in maritime engineering.
The “H2 Barge 2” represents a significant step forward in the maritime industry’s journey towards zero emissions. This vessel has undergone a complete retrofit from traditional internal combustion technology to cutting-edge hydrogen fuel technology. The retrofit involved removing the main engine and reduction gearbox, replacing the diesel engine driving the bow thruster and diesel generators with a new modular propulsion system. This system includes electric motors, hydrogen tanks, a Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cell system for converting hydrogen into electric power, and a battery system. The “H2 Barge 2” boasts six fuel cell modules, providing a total fuel cell capacity of 1.2 MW.
SUBSIDY FROM MINISTRY OF ECONOMIC AFFAIRS AND CLIMATE
An innovative cooling and ventilation system has been installed in the “H2 Barge 2,” supported by a subsidy from the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate. This system enhances the vessel’s efficiency and sustainability. Following the retrofit, the vessel now has a cargo capacity of 190 TEU, with provisions for an additional push barge, enabling Future Proof Shipping to offer emissions-free container shipping on the busy Rotterdam – Duisburg route along the Rhine.
This project aligns perfectly with the shared sustainable missions of Holland Shipyards Group and Future Proof Shipping. Both organizations are committed to pioneering innovations that pave the way for a zero-emission shipping world.
Holland Shipyards Group thank Future Proof Shipping for their continued trust in to deliver these innovative projects. Holland Shipyards Group remains at the forefront of developing green shipping solutions. We are excited to continue our journey of innovation, pushing the boundaries of what is possible in maritime sustainability.
