Elliott Bay Design Group and Silverback Introduce New Truckable Tug

Silverback Marine Delivers Twin Z-Drive Truckable Tug with 14,300-lb Bollard Pull

Silverback Marine and Elliott Bay Design Group have announced the launch of a new truckable tug platform designed to expand operational capability in the small-vessel and non-Subchapter M markets. The companies confirmed that the OX Series tug, equipped with twin Z-drive propulsion, has successfully completed sea trials and commissioning earlier this month.

Developed to meet demand for a compact yet tow-capable solution, the OX platform departs from traditional truckable tug designs, which typically utilise propeller-and-rudder configurations optimised primarily for pushing operations. Instead, the new vessel adopts a tractor tug-style arrangement intended to enhance manoeuvrability and overall performance.

The tug features a 25 ft by 16 ft hull form incorporating lines typically associated with larger tractor tugs. This configuration supports the integration of a Schottel Z-drive propulsion package, powered by twin Cummins QSL engines rated at 290 hp each, delivering approximately 14,300 lbs of bollard pull astern

Michael Complita, VP of Strategic Expansion and Principal in Charge at Elliott Bay Design Group, stated: “EBDG provided the complete engineering and design package, including lofting and production support, and we’re proud to be part of this project. The result is a next-generation truckable tug that goes beyond traditional limitations, with the ability to push, pull, and rotate, bringing a new level of capability and versatility to the market.”

Ian Gracey, Founder of Silverback Marine, stated:“Our idea for this unprecedented vessel called for a design and engineering firm that could truly understand the magnitude of what we envisioned. Communication and context gathering was a key part of the project. There was a lot to pack in a small space, and we selected Elliott Bay Design Group based on multiple positive past experiences.

Silverback was extremely satisfied with the work of the EBDG team, with all information and calculations being very accurate. The process was smooth and the cadence of communication was key to such a successful project.”

Equipped with a Wintech, 480V 3 Phase towing winch, the tug also features two Wintech facing winches. The twin Cummins QSL9 diesel motors offer a strong yet fuel-efficient power package.

Another unique feature of the OX is the direct-glaze wheelhouse suite. Offering panoramic, 360 degree visibility, the large overhead spotter windows, coupled with a full-height forward window, offer the operator unmatched comfort.

Additional seating in the wheelhouse for 2 crew members, and the large Norsap helm chair offer captain and crew luxurious passage.

“We are excited to offer towing companies a truly game-changing fleet option with the OX. Because of the nimble manoeuvrability, two of these smaller vessels can do the work of one costly, large vessel. With todays market challenges of licensed captain availability, Subchapter M costs, haul out and maintenance costs, the OX offers a truly cost effective, powerful solution to todays changing market”.

The OX tug also makes for an attractive Z-Drive trainer, which can be utilised not only for exposing new operators to the benefits of Azimuth style control, but also a dual purpose asset that can produce revenue when not used for training.

The first vessel will operate for the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers, working in ship assist and barge work. The vessel is available with a steel or aluminium hull options, and a wide range of interior customisations.
