Three purpose-designed pontoons form part of a wider berthing upgrade delivered for KBS Maritime at HM Naval Base Portsmouth
Inland and Coastal Marina Systems has supplied three heavy-duty concrete tug berth pontoons for the modernisation of the Tidal Basin at HM Naval Base Portsmouth, replacing ageing berthing infrastructure that had been in service for more than 40 years.
The new pontoons form part of a wider upgrade delivered for KBS Maritime, supporting the operational requirements of the Royal Navy and associated harbour services. The project’s principal contractor, Herbosch-Kiere, was responsible for delivering the wider works, with Inland and Coastal Marina Systems supplying the pontoon infrastructure.
Measuring 20m x 4m each, the three purpose-designed pontoons were engineered to provide the stability, strength and durability required to accommodate large, powerful tugs and the personnel working aboard them.
The modernisation also included new wall guides, brows, access gangways and upgraded water and electrical services, creating a more resilient and accessible berthing facility for the naval base’s tug fleet.
Reinforced concrete was selected for its long-term durability in demanding marine environments, offering corrosion resistance and reduced maintenance requirements compared with traditional steel and older pontoon systems. The new installation is intended to provide a safer, more reliable berthing solution while supporting future operational requirements.
Transporting the pontoons from the company’s headquarters in Ireland to Portsmouth presented a logistical challenge. Each unit was delivered by heavy goods vehicle (HGV), before being lifted by crane into the water and towed around to the naval base. The operation was completed successfully with support from Whittens and Portico.
The new pontoon system provides a more durable and stable berthing platform, with the flexibility to support evolving vessel requirements and future harbour operations. By replacing infrastructure that had exceeded four decades of service, the project delivers a long-term upgrade to the berthing facilities supporting naval operations at Portsmouth.
