Beam Expands Fleet to Service Offshore Wind Industry

Beam, a leader in offshore wind innovation, today announced a £15 million investment in cutting-edge technology aimed at accelerating the global energy transition. The investment includes the addition of two Xplorer Autonomous Surface Vessels (ASVs) and a Quantum EV electric work-class Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV). This advanced fleet will play a pivotal role in making offshore wind development more efficient, reliable, and cost-effective.

The expanded capabilities offered by these vessels mark a significant step in Beam’s mission to support the entire lifecycle of offshore wind farms—from site characterisation through operations & maintenance (O&M) to decommissioning. As the offshore wind industry strives to replace traditional oil and gas energy sources, Beam is poised to lead the charge with this innovative investment.

The Xplorer ASVs are equipped with advanced capabilities to perform a wide range of tasks, supported by large aft decks capable of handling high payloads. Their intelligent stabilisers ensure optimal performance even in challenging sea conditions, minimising movement and improving the accuracy of data collection.

What truly sets Xplorer apart is its ability to operate autonomously while deploying advanced AI models for real-time data collection and transmission to shore. This innovative approach enhances operational efficiency and ensures rapid data processing, allowing for more streamlined project timelines

The Quantum EV Remotely Operated Vehicle is a high-performance electric vehicle that surpasses conventional work-class ROVs in agility and energy efficiency. Lighter and more adaptable, it is particularly suited for high-current, shallow-water operations, offering Beam the ability to operate in difficult conditions while reducing project costs and environmental impact.

By integrating with Beam’s autonomous technology stack, the Quantum EV ROV expands operational windows, cuts energy consumption, and lowers contamination risks.

As part of their expansion, Beam are set to hire over 150 technology specialists across Their UK offices in Bristol, Aberdeen, and Edinburgh over the next year. Globally, Beam will recruit 50 new employees to support international projects, including positions in the US and Asia.

These additions will empower them to deliver innovative offshore solutions at a faster pace and lower costs, ultimately driving greater profitability for wind farm operators and contributing to the broader energy transition.

Simon Adams, Programme Director – ASV at Beam: “This investment underscores our commitment to leveraging cutting-edge technology to deliver superior services and drive the growth of renewable energy worldwide.”

Marc Coull, Programme Director – Service Delivery, adds: “At Beam, we’re committed to pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in offshore wind operations; the addition of Xplorer autonomous surface vessels to our fleet marks a significant step forward in this mission.”
