Conversion equips former deck carrier GMK-1 with DP2 capability and cable carousel system for subsea operations
Once designed to transport heavy modules, the GMK-1 Deck Carrier is now being transformed by Turkish naval architecture and design company NAVTEK into the cable laying vessel, Sofie A for J.A. Shipping A/S, marking a significant step forward in subsea infrastructure deployment capability.
Having led the vessel’s original design, NAVTEK has re-engaged to deliver a comprehensive engineering transformation—repurposing the platform for high-spec offshore operations, enhancing capability, and aligning the vessel with the demands of modern cable-laying campaigns in open-sea environments.
The Sofie A conversion programme includes:
- A robust offshore platform with principal dimensions of 92.9 m LOA and 22 m beam
- Integration of a cable carousel system to support subsea installation scopes
- Single-cabin accommodation for up to 59 personnel (POB)
- DP2 capability for precise station-keeping under full-load conditions
- Full compliance with Danish Flag, Unrestricted Navigation, SPS, and DP2 class requirements
- Hydrodynamic and propulsion upgrades, including a bulbous bow, four bow thrusters, and two stern thrusters
More than a standard conversion, the project represents a full redefinition of the vessel’s operational role—transforming a transport asset into a specialised offshore installation unit.
NAVTEK extends its appreciation to J.A. Shipping A/S and Bureau Veritas for their continued trust and collaboration on this complex and forward-looking project.
