Penta-Ocean cable laying vessel to support Japan’s offshore wind expansion with advanced cable installation capabilities
PaxOcean, which owns and operates five shipyards across Singapore, China and Indonesia, has held a keel laying ceremony for cable laying vessel G8075 for Penta-Ocean Construction Company Limited at its Batam shipyard, Indonesia, marking a key milestone in the companies’ ongoing collaboration. The vessel is being built to support Japan’s expanding offshore wind market.
The self-propelled cable laying vessel will feature state-of-the-art capabilities to facilitate cable laying and burial for bottom-fixed and floating offshore wind farms, as well as submarine direct current transmission cables. Designed for operations in severe offshore conditions, the vessel includes:
- Two 5,000t cable carousels (10,000t total capacity) for large wind farms.
- Advanced trenching and cable burial systems utilizing the latest ROV and trencher technology from SMD (UK).
- High-precision ClassNK DPS2 dynamic positioning system with seven thrusters (16,000 kW output).
- Future-ready environmental features, including a battery storage system and methanol-ready specifications to promote carbon neutrality.
This cable laying vessel project builds on a well-established partnership between PaxOcean and Penta-Ocean Construction Company Limited, following the successful delivery of a wind turbine installation vessel (WTIV) in 2023. The collaboration reflects a shared commitment to advancing offshore wind capabilities through engineering innovation and operational excellence.
PaxOcean expressed its appreciation to Penta-Ocean Construction Company Limited and ClassNK – Nippon Kaiji Kyokai for their continued trust, and recognised the efforts of its Batam team in delivering the milestone safely and ahead of schedule.
