SCHOTTEL Propulsion System for Four Offshore Construction Vessels

The Chinese Wuchang Shipbuilding Industry Group has awarded SCHOTTEL a contract to develop a comprehensive propulsion concept for four new Offshore Construction Vessels (OCV). Designed by Salt Ship Design from Norway under the project name Salt 308 OCV, the 100-meter-long vessels will operate in water depths of up to 3,000 meters in highly challenging offshore environments.

The customer for the vessels, an undisclosed first-class European owner, will operate them in the traditional oil and gas industry as well as in the renewable energy industry

“We would like to thank all project partners for the trust they have placed in SCHOTTEL in equipping this OCV series with our drives,” says Roland Schwandt, Deputy Managing Director of SCHOTTEL: “The package with five drives per vessel offers the future operator the best technology available on the market for dynamic positioning in demanding offshore applications.”

Each Offshore Construction Vessel will be equipped with a comprehensive SCHOTTEL propulsion package, designed to meet the challenging conditions offshore:

– 2x SCHOTTEL Dynamic RudderPropeller type SRP 610 DL
The SCHOTTEL Dynamic RudderPropeller (SRP-D) was convincing in the overall package as an essential component for dynamic positioning. In addition to significantly shortened propeller acceleration/deceleration times and high-speed azimuth control, the SRP-D is characterized by a compact design with an integrated drive motor (“Embedded L-Drive”) and a propeller shaft inclined by eight degrees. This leads to less interaction between the drives and between the drives and the hull. Each ship will be equipped with two SRP 610 DL with a propeller diameter of 3,200 mm and an input power of 2,700 kW.

– 1x SCHOTTEL Retractable RudderPropeller type SRP-R 380 L
The main propulsion is complemented in the bow of the vessel by a retractable rudderpropeller type SRP-R 380 with a propeller diameter of 2,200 mm and an input power of 1,500 kW. Like the SRP-D mentioned above, it has an integrated electric propulsion motor. The propulsion, which is based on SCHOTTEL’s proven rudderpropeller technology, has a propeller shaft inclined by 8 degrees to increase propulsion efficiency.

– 2x SCHOTTEL TransverseThrusters type STT 6
Two additional transverse thrusters in the bow with an input power of 2,050 kW ensure even better maneuverability during dynamic positioning. The propellers have a diameter of 2,740 mm. To increase comfort for the crew, both SCHOTTEL STT 6 are elastically mounted.

The new Salt 308 OCV design has a length of 100 m, a width of 23 m, a draft of 6.5 m and a deck area of 1,150 m². The vessels are being prepared for operation with alternative fuels. Delivery of the first vessel is planned for the end of 2026.
