Western Baltija Shipbuilding Launches Electric Ferry MF Saltvær

MF Saltvær battery-electric ferry for Torghatten Nord enters final outfitting and commissioning phase ahead of delivery

Western Baltija Shipbuilding has launched the new electric ferry MF Saltvær, a major milestone in the construction of the NSD 50CFb design developed by The Norwegian Ship Design Company for Norwegian operator Torghatten Nord AS.

The vessel entered the water via a specially arranged semi-submersible barge operation, marking the transition from hull construction to the final outfitting and commissioning phase.

Measuring 73.3 metres in length with a 14.3-metre beam, MF Saltvær is designed to transport 199 passengers, 50 vehicles, and cargo between Norwegian island communities. Due to the harsh weather conditions north of the Arctic Circle, the ferry is designed with a fully enclosed car deck. The hybrid ferry will primarily operate on battery-electric propulsion, supported by conventional fuel when required.

The turnkey newbuild project is being delivered by Western Baltija Shipbuilding in cooperation with The Norwegian Ship Design Company, alongside multiple companies within the WESTERN SHIPYARD GROUP.

“Turnkey vessel projects are always distinct in their scale and scope. This ferry stands out due to the overall complexity of its implementation, requiring careful integration of systems and strict compliance with technical and safety requirements. Throughout the project, we are continuously developing new competencies. The key is to retain both what we learn and the people who gain that experience,” says Vitalij Frolov, Director at Western Baltija Shipbuilding.

Following the launch, the vessel will undergo continued outfitting, systems integration, harbour testing, and preparations for delivery to Torghatten Nord AS.
